Datanas and Prominents
Angus's Datana, photographed July 26, 2015 at my home lights. This is the only individual I have seen. Note the scalloped fringe on the wings. This moth is more grayish in color than most Datanas.
Sigmoid Prominent. I found a couple of these moths at Hocking Hills on May 13, 2023. They have never appeared at my home lights.
Angle-lined Prominent, closely related to the species above. This is my only sighting of the species. Photographed May 1, 2022 at Hocking Hills.
Walnut Caterpillar Moth. This is one of several Datana species which are very tricky to tell apart. Walnut Caterpillar Moths are by far the most common Datana species that I see. I find them at my lights all summer long, from late May through August.
Contracted Datana, photographed July 4, 2016. I found this moth at Shawnee State Forest (southern Ohio). It is the only Contracted Datana I have seen.
