LARGE LACE-BORDER MOTH

Some forms have only two small dark spots instead of the full lace border.

Some Large Lace Border moths have no dark markings at all, but they are still beautiful.

This is one of my favorite moths. I love the endless variety of their "lace" patterns and their delicate beauty.

Unlike most moths, which try to hide during the day, Large Lace Border moths perch atop leaves in plain sight. How do they avoid getting eaten by birds? Well, these moths might look beautiful to us, but birds avoid them because they resemble bird droppings.

This species is commonly found near wooded areas from late May through early September.

This is another two-spotted individual, photographed at my moth lights.
