MAPLE SPANWORM

Maple Spanworms come to my moth lights in good numbers.

Maple Spanworm moths rest with their wings half-opened at an angle, resembling a curled dead leaf.

Another Maple Spanworm moth. Note that two other species have similar common names: the Large Maple Spanworm (Prochoerodes lineola) and the Lesser Maple Spanworm (Speranza pustularia). These three species have similar names but look nothing alike.

This species typically flies late in the year. I find them at my lights in September and October. (I also have one early sighting in Adams County, Ohio in July, but I have never found them that early at my home lights.)

I look forward to finding Maple Spanworms every fall. They are one of the moth world's greatest leaf-mimics.
