Paectes Moths, Gray Marvel, Grieving Woodling, Stored Grain Moth, Miranda Moth, and Common Pinkband

Eyed Paectes Moth. Their caterpillars feed on poison ivy. Considering the amount of poison ivy near my house, I would expect to encounter these moths more often! However, I only have this one sighting on June 6, 2016.

Pygmy Paectes, photographed May 14, 2023 at Hocking Hills (eastern Ohio). This is my only sighting of this species. Most records of these moths are further to the south of our area.

Gray Marvel Moth. I have seen a couple of these moths in late July, but they are uncommon visitors to my lights.

Grieving Woodling, also known as the Lined Black Aspen. Photographed May 12, 2018 at Hocking Hills. This is another species which I have not yet found at home.

Stored Grain Moth. These moth are found worldwide and are likely an introduced species in North America. They can be pests and feed on stored food in pantries. I only have this one sighting (fortunately!).

Miranda Moth, photographed at my moth lights on September 23, 2017. This is my only sighting of the species.

Common Pinkband. I find these moths at my lights from July through September.

Large Paectes moth. I found a couple of these moths at my lights in early September 2025. They feed on Sweetgum trees and possibly other host plants.

Large Paectes moth with its abdomen pointed upward. This resting posture enables the moth to blend in with the tree branch. The abdomen resembles a broken-off extension on the twig.
