PERO MOTHS, MAPLE LOOPER, and american barred umber
Maple Looper moth. These sleek moths are very common at my lights.
This is a Honest Pero moth. I have only seen two individuals: this one on May 7, 2023, and another on August 5, 2015. They are much less common at my lights than the Hubner's Peros above. Note that this Honest Pero has a very shallow upward curve in the PM line, and the wing edges are less serrated. The wings are smoother and less mottled. See Bugguide for other differences between these species.
Yes, it is a purple moth! Hubner's Pero moths can have a beautiful purplish sheen when fresh. (Faded individuals look brown.)
American Barred Umber moth, my only sighting of this species to date. Found at my lights on May 2, 2019.
Another Hubner's Pero moth. I find them in fairly good numbers at my moths lights, from April through September.
Hubner's Pero moth. Note the large upward curve in the PM line, the mottled outer wing margins with serrated edges, and the tiny black dot centered near the bottom of each wing.
I have found numerous Maple Loopers at my UV lights every month from April through September.
