VARIOUS GRAY MOTHS #1

Brown-shaded Gray. This species is abundant in our area, and it flies almost continuously throughout the year.

Canadian Melanolophia. I have found this species every month from March through October.

Canadian Melanolophia. Notice the white V-shaped markings that resemble a seagull's silhouette.

Bent-line Gray moth. I have found several individuals from April through September.

Large Purplish Gray. Very similar to the Brown-shaded Gray above, but with a faint purplish wash. (There is also a similar species called the Small Purplish Gray, so it is important to measure members of this group.) I have found a couple of Large Purplish Grays in the month of April.

Another Bent-line Gray moth at my moth lights.

Another Canadian Melanolophia. This is an abundant species at my moth lights.

Another Brown-shaded Gray. I have found these moths every month from February through November. My early and late dates are February 22nd and November 12th.

Bent-line Gray moth. Notice the large hollow spots and the sharp points on the PM line.

Canadian Melanolophia resting on my fingertip.
